A World Split Open is a 128-page perfect bound book that features the poetry and prose of Mildred Farkash Miller. Published by an arts committee of Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association, A World Split Open still has salability over ten years after its introduction.
Almost 3000 copies have been sold, and A World Split Open is/was required reading for a college poetry class and several gifted and talented high school programs in Minneapolis Public Schools.
I designed the cover and book interior. The front cover depicts a torn piece of paper serving as a gap between Mildred as a young child in New Jersey and elderly Mildred. Handwriting her poetry on legal pads, Mildred then transcribes her words via her old typewriter for submission to different periodicals. The back cover (not shown) has some lines of her poetry typed in that old Underwood look—uneven spacing and heavy ink strikes, which I think adds her personality to the look of the book.
